VO2 Max Testing and Lactate Threshold Analysis
Optimize your performance and endurance with cutting-edge physiological testing tailored to your goals.

Why Combine VO2 Max Testing and Lactate Threshold Analysis?
VO2 Max Testing: Measures your body’s ability to utilize oxygen during exercise, offering insights into your cardiovascular fitness and endurance potential.
Lactate Threshold Analysis: Identifies the intensity at which lactate production exceeds clearance, revealing your maximal lactate steady state (MLSS).
Comprehensive Metrics: Understand your aerobic capacity, metabolic efficiency, and endurance performance.
Validated Protocols: Testing conducted with research-grade equipment and led by certified experts ensures precise and reliable results.
How It Works
Building on the Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test, blood samples are taken at incremental exercise stages to measure lactate concentrations at each level. Lactate measurements give a detailed picture of how your body transitions between aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Additional outputs we correlate include heart rate and pace/power at lactate threshold.

Benefits

Powerful Indicator of Performance
Maximal Lactate Steady State is the highest intensity where lactate production and clearance are balanced, reflecting peak aerobic power and endurance capacity. It helps identify the optimal pace for endurance events.
1

Lactate-Driven Training Zones
Lactate analysis tailors training zones (1-5) to your unique heart rate and pace/power at lactate threshold, optimizing performance for your specific goals. This data can be shared with your coach.

Improve Endurance
Lactate Threshold is important in physiological profiling. It defines the upper limit for training sessions and is designed to result in minimal physiological stress, rapid recovery, and boost performance.

Track Progress Over Time
Periodic VO2 Max and lactate threshold testing lets you measure the effectiveness of your training regimen, translating into significant gains in speed and endurance.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is VO2 Max testing?
VO2 Max testing measures your body’s ability to consume oxygen during exercise, offering insights into your cardiovascular fitness and endurance capacity.
What is lactate threshold analysis?
Lactate threshold analysis measures blood lactate concentration during exercise to identify the intensity at which lactate production exceeds clearance. This metric is critical for assessing endurance performance and prescribing training zones.
How should I prepare for the assessments and what should I expect during VO2 Max Testing and Lactate Threshold Analysis?
To ensure the accuracy of your results, we recommend the following:
- Avoid exercise 12- 24 hours before the test.
- Refrain from eating a heavy meal within 2–3 hours prior.
- Wear comfortable workout clothes and proper athletic footwear.
- Stay hydrated, but avoid caffeinated beverages for 4 hours.
Prior to testing, we review your fitness level, goals, and health history to determine the appropriate test protocol.
**Do not undergo testing if you've experienced a respiratory, gastrointestinal, or other illness within 1 week prior. Consult the testing center if you have any health concerns.
The test measures your oxygen consumption as you gradually increase effort on a treadmill or bike. You’ll wear a mask connected to advanced equipment, which analyzes oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange as well as other metrics such as heart rate and ventilation in real time. Blood samples are taken at specific intensities to measure lactate concentration. This testing continues until the second lactate threshold or maximal lactate steady state is reached. The test typically takes 30-45 minutes for the combined test, and you’ll receive a detailed report immediately afterward.
What is the maximal lactate steady state (MLSS)?
MLSS represents the highest exercise intensity where lactate production and clearance are balanced. It is a key indicator of maximum aerobic power and endurance performance.
What happens after the test?
After your VO2 Max test, you’ll receive a high-level overview of your results immediately. Within about 10 days, we’ll arrange a follow-up consultation, which typically takes 15–20 minutes. During this session, we’ll answer questions, provide further clarification, and ensure you fully understand your results. We also provide you with pertinent and evidence-based resources to support your understanding and enable informed decisions about your health and fitness. This ensures that you have reliable, science-backed information for your reference as you work towards your goals. Some clients prefer to take their results directly to their coaches.
Who conducts the tests?
Our tests are performed by certified exercise physiologists with expertise in VO2 Max, lactate threshold analysis, and performance diagnostics.
How often should I retest?
Retesting every 3–6 months is recommended for those actively training or aiming to track progress and refine their training zones. Some athletes may choose to perform this even more frequently.
